Weeks of rain and cold prevented me taking photos of<b> <a href="http://buckinghamroad.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/pattern-tester-cambie-dress.html">the finished dress</a></b> at the time. Then more recently, I had heart surgery to fix a problem with my 'electronics', so that delayed things even further!!!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

The pattern is called February Beret and can be found at <a href="http://sockpixie.blogspot.com.au/2008/10/dear-elizabeth-how-about-february-beret.html">Sock Pixie</a> for free. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The pattern is knitted initially on DPN's, as you need to make an icord. Then a circular needle is used, changing to DPN's when needed.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I would not recommend this pattern for the beginning knitter, as the process of grafting well over 100 stitches onto the icord I found really tricky (this was only my second knitting project). Once the stitches are on and a few rows have been stitched, the whole process becomes much more enjoyable, especially when the beautiful pattern begins to emerge.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<span style="text-align: left;">The yarn I used was <a href="http://www.theyarncafe.com/rooster-almerino-dk-in-custard/">Rooster AlmerinoDK in Custard</a>. I purchased mine from The Yarn Cafe and it was shipped to Australia quickly. The pattern is brilliantly easy and stitches up a dream. I especially love the scalloped ends that the pattern creates. </span> <br />

I would recommend this pattern to all knitting levels, as the pattern is disbelievingly simple to knit.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My dear friend Mill gifted me <a href="http://www.bookdepository.com/Stitch-Time-Vintage-Knitting-Crochet-Patterns-1920-1949-v-1-Jane-Waller/9780955620621">A Stitch in Time Volume 1</a>, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw this pattern. I hastily ordered the yarn this pattern called for, some beautiful Shetland Wool from <a href="http://www.shetlandwoolbrokers.co.uk/">Jamieson & Smith</a>, which is perfect for fair isle work.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBRClghUcF9mZkYBctSXSdyZ1nTuoM3di1XM6EQsbhuZTrnN4DoWYzZIXVp6L0PTX6ohOcxOytUU2s54Q36L5Cz2XAeg89CrsQSded9K0FJv7KtX-uEi4EqHS6kM7bsr6GiblYXm18Cx-V/s1600/photo+(13).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBRClghUcF9mZkYBctSXSdyZ1nTuoM3di1XM6EQsbhuZTrnN4DoWYzZIXVp6L0PTX6ohOcxOytUU2s54Q36L5Cz2XAeg89CrsQSded9K0FJv7KtX-uEi4EqHS6kM7bsr6GiblYXm18Cx-V/s400/photo+(13).jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
The fair isle motif looks simple to follow, and as it is only the yoke that has the design, it is a project that is achievable for me.<br />
<br />
While it may not be finished in time for <i>this </i>winter, it will be a joy to make!<br />

Real life some how got in the way. The weeks have rolled by, winter has arrived, and somehow it is almost the middle of the year (can you believe it?). I have been very busy at work lately, with my roster a bit all over the place knocking me out of routine. I made an effort this weekend to get back to my sewing machine, and with very pleasing results, but more about that another time.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For now I will show you something that has been a WIP for too long! This is the second <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/hand-quilter/fast-baby-cardigan-2">Fast Baby Cardigan</a> I have made. You might remember I made <a href="http://hand-quilter.blogspot.com.au/2012/01/knitted-baby-cardigan-complete.html">one of these</a> some months back? Well this latest version, Cardigan 2.0, is for some dear friends of mine in The Neatherlands who have a baby due to arrive early July. While it will be a summer bub, it won't be too long before the cooler months arrive in the North, and the little one will need a warm woollen cardigan to keep it cozy.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSTb2__5NaGxpDxXU5E-t7X6PdvgVcw2ad9azsDxIUcRomu31EfF0Q6F08DuVKP8XYr7FCvA09QXLTjYRRm3oitYQNrHNvnvjWJT688s3FKZ6Wq83kiWT5YCgFMQgbrasLPYOKkldUn7Og/s1600/photo+(15).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSTb2__5NaGxpDxXU5E-t7X6PdvgVcw2ad9azsDxIUcRomu31EfF0Q6F08DuVKP8XYr7FCvA09QXLTjYRRm3oitYQNrHNvnvjWJT688s3FKZ6Wq83kiWT5YCgFMQgbrasLPYOKkldUn7Og/s400/photo+(15).JPG" width="298" /></a></div><br />
<span style="text-align: left;">I was really satisfied with Cardigan 2.0, as I managed to knit in button holes! I know, sounds obvious but the first time I knitted this pattern it was my <i>first knitted object ever</i> and I just assumed that button holes would be explicitly included in the pattern (they are not). Snaps covered up this error with the first cardigan, but second time round I was determined to do it properly, and I am very pleased with the result...</span> <br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I know this is not a sewn, knitted or spun item, but it is handmade so that's ok, right? Jamie and I spent the weekend building a potting table for our garden. My parent in laws were visiting and gave us a lot of help also with this endeavour. To be fair, Jamie is the total brains and brawn behind this creation, my role was more as the 'artistic director'. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I have dreamt of having my own potting table ever since we moved to Newcastle and rented a house with a yard. Potting tables can be as unique as your garden is. Most often they are crafted from re-purposed materials that the gardener has managed to salvage from a local source. Random bits are nailed, glued and screwed together to create something for the garden that is functional, and in my case, pleasing to the eye.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQKXX0we0PTFfEs3RN3mzaId5FQVSDIQbWnylYp9pYEKyBDYFXTt30jBYK6VYb5y2etEQ_P_1Zr-6E_pvzbvBvSOWfi3hqDLy0TrieLMBmZVJGfKZ10a0lkHY7Unbds0ln3yDsNU0K29H3/s1600/DSC04134.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQKXX0we0PTFfEs3RN3mzaId5FQVSDIQbWnylYp9pYEKyBDYFXTt30jBYK6VYb5y2etEQ_P_1Zr-6E_pvzbvBvSOWfi3hqDLy0TrieLMBmZVJGfKZ10a0lkHY7Unbds0ln3yDsNU0K29H3/s400/DSC04134.JPG" width="266" /></a></div><br />
This potting table is completely made from pallet timber I was able to obtain for <i>free </i>from a retired gentleman who lives near the town where I work. He builds chicken coops and bird breeding boxes in his spare time and was only too happy for me to take what timber I needed. I did offer to pay him for the timber, but he replied with a smile "I would be offended if you paid me, please take as much as you need". He spent almost 45 minutes with me discussing my design plans and selecting the perfect pieces for the project from his substantial timber pile.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigNzSsq4t9O6TyQgTk_veN1GQ1-YnRXNLQoH_Zr7-fOerH21nwPsQkFfQ_fEIV-BCBlaVtkyltUNd8xZNozNEFvn7Z0sh6XyNez6L_lHSqV6d1BZOkLvTw_a_xnGHcxToZ4N5Vsnzci3VX/s1600/DSC04132.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigNzSsq4t9O6TyQgTk_veN1GQ1-YnRXNLQoH_Zr7-fOerH21nwPsQkFfQ_fEIV-BCBlaVtkyltUNd8xZNozNEFvn7Z0sh6XyNez6L_lHSqV6d1BZOkLvTw_a_xnGHcxToZ4N5Vsnzci3VX/s400/DSC04132.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Pallet timber is ideal for this kind of project. It is cheap, or possibly free, and is a standard size. Pallets are made from outdoor wood so this table will survive being exposed to the weather. What I also prefer is the timbers 'rustic' look. Every piece is weathers differently. Knots. Stains. Splinters. All slats are unique.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvSHxJ5xTeeAfllF1klK57DxzgZtuGo5V2lKMphXop2AHqCJfjHHVG8aC4S8F6QjoE2pbfuuKkt9QaQYoNc006nA4AvUgqzEitDMry3Z6qFS_Qu0vC-sCmYFqGlI_-oucaHKbrvuTtlslH/s1600/DSC04137.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvSHxJ5xTeeAfllF1klK57DxzgZtuGo5V2lKMphXop2AHqCJfjHHVG8aC4S8F6QjoE2pbfuuKkt9QaQYoNc006nA4AvUgqzEitDMry3Z6qFS_Qu0vC-sCmYFqGlI_-oucaHKbrvuTtlslH/s400/DSC04137.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
I am considering adding some nails or hooks to the upper part of the timber frame, to use as a place to hang my gardening hand tools whilst I am working. <a href="http://down---to---earth.blogspot.com.au/2011/10/growing-organic-tomatoes.html">Rhonda </a>also uses a potting box to prevent wasting some of her soil while she is potting. I am hoping I can whip one of these up with all the off cuts I have left.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiedNnLzc55Qh4JjW20kWW8u3c9XvXjehYFZTrL4AunFJL3NjvJoXiT_zxxeI-UAXAEoTrAZylG_trbWuMZnIom9b9RJ66yI538WHntzqC4F3TczB_xAk3VGnighKUkj1fP61eOVBFP7-qt/s1600/DSC04136.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiedNnLzc55Qh4JjW20kWW8u3c9XvXjehYFZTrL4AunFJL3NjvJoXiT_zxxeI-UAXAEoTrAZylG_trbWuMZnIom9b9RJ66yI538WHntzqC4F3TczB_xAk3VGnighKUkj1fP61eOVBFP7-qt/s400/DSC04136.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Below is the photo I found on <a href="http://pinterest.com/sewlife/">pinterest </a>months ago that I used for the inspiration for this potting table. The table was made by Bruce at www.thedesignpallet.com. The image has been sitting in my <a href="http://pinterest.com/sewlife/gardens/">Gardens</a> folder for some time, waiting for me to get my hands on some pallets.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Jamie was really pleased with how similar his creation was to the inspiration photo...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGdO5vQDCj2qGSPUzb8SGDudioz3RJy10CCztaGgpsLa_3hiVl-cTm9C5gZ__KkF7RI0eFOIiiiuacY5BohAIzve697ZHWRHmByB9Njzf9ITPYrrKac_d0e8VR_yZFrF3ESWCNr0snnvUy/s1600/DSC04130.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGdO5vQDCj2qGSPUzb8SGDudioz3RJy10CCztaGgpsLa_3hiVl-cTm9C5gZ__KkF7RI0eFOIiiiuacY5BohAIzve697ZHWRHmByB9Njzf9ITPYrrKac_d0e8VR_yZFrF3ESWCNr0snnvUy/s400/DSC04130.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
We finished the potting table as the sun was setting, so I am yet to actually use it to pot any seeds. Winter is a difficult time to garden as night falls before I am home from work, leaving me unable to garden most evenings. Sometimes I do a spot of weeding before work, but that depends on the chill in the air and me not hitting the 'snooze' button. I am sure this table will get much use though next weekend!<br />

Where I live in Australia, there simply isn't a decent local yarn store that stocks a variety of brands at </span><span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">competitive</span><span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;"> prices. Since adding knitting to my repertoire, I have been keen to look beyond my shores for suppliers of yarns made from natural fibres at a price I can afford (including shipping). My sister in law pointed me in the direction of this company, and I have fallen in love. </span> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaXgO-Q5vzwDBsD4NOjkc9hSB_ZOoI7ymHrxGoVVbu1DNYyRpeQYSjVWdYsjvudMpiNn-P-2p3mS1vDUSMpi3USD3KMOdM2e5dPx1tRDPUrB2FRsHRLCZBkkxTSMrfk9hANG_yfM6tYKwR/s1600/DSC02248.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaXgO-Q5vzwDBsD4NOjkc9hSB_ZOoI7ymHrxGoVVbu1DNYyRpeQYSjVWdYsjvudMpiNn-P-2p3mS1vDUSMpi3USD3KMOdM2e5dPx1tRDPUrB2FRsHRLCZBkkxTSMrfk9hANG_yfM6tYKwR/s400/DSC02248.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
The website is easy to navigate, with the different yarn weights being identified through species of birds such as <a href="http://quinceandco.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=2">lark</a>, <a href="http://quinceandco.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=65">sparrow</a>, and <a href="http://quinceandco.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=3">osprey</a>. I just had to share their colour book with you all. For anyone who is a knitter, crocheter, or utilise yarns for their crafts, this is a real treat for the eyes...<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Fine yarn is such a treat and can be so soft to work with. I utilised my raised brick garden beds that were already divided into two. I cultivated the beds with organic compost and manure from my chickens. I let the beds sit for two weeks, then planted my herbs and mulched using newspaper and sugar cane to help keep weeds to a minimum.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfnBsHoTjKSvqb0bSswT9IfAE1kkRsTt0bWwiWTkEth7l6lthkTqm_Ti_Wn_1yFdWFl5j-KymEJJpYKxCZaOL057YGDfJjhn7pVFMZvME8DJ5YJ2Sq1EECAps9lSNQkOj77y4T4T5SUSi8/s1600/P1010081.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfnBsHoTjKSvqb0bSswT9IfAE1kkRsTt0bWwiWTkEth7l6lthkTqm_Ti_Wn_1yFdWFl5j-KymEJJpYKxCZaOL057YGDfJjhn7pVFMZvME8DJ5YJ2Sq1EECAps9lSNQkOj77y4T4T5SUSi8/s400/P1010081.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><br />
<span style="text-align: left;">Skye writes "Base-note herbs are the ones that help lay the foundation of any dish. They endure the burden of long, slow cooking, continuing to add their flavour as long as they are cooking". </span> <br />
<span style="text-align: left;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivlSVSwPvHz-qN5kWvWie7QaV-8-Vea4hdnYoBBDaEzS58tZ9UznFTiviW4hUcVdHjKUalp0JZNYBVfifS-l9-D-Ai2cagOZzCq06UhETWxuk9N-K2oId72XjjTTuSqaObBgvBwWh4_H1p/s1600/P1010082.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivlSVSwPvHz-qN5kWvWie7QaV-8-Vea4hdnYoBBDaEzS58tZ9UznFTiviW4hUcVdHjKUalp0JZNYBVfifS-l9-D-Ai2cagOZzCq06UhETWxuk9N-K2oId72XjjTTuSqaObBgvBwWh4_H1p/s400/P1010082.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>~ My base-note bed: sage, thyme, oregano and rosemary.</i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
Skye writes "Top-note herbs are like the icing on the cake - they complete the dish. These herbs don't tend to hold their flavour through vigorous cooking but must be added very close to the end of the recipe, even if only as a garnish, to maintain their clarity and vibrancy".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjByhCi0By_CQ8v3FXqq9DGwsYqpX9PyGIiRaO-sD4rrCgMQcoBgQFLHVapZiJ7Cva7NSIALXZlIEUgv3GP_sRCZPLCNZK1JIA7NlR7M8fDjF9wC-2dQnPAo6Pl2urqLk1cTtArxkoMb8mM/s1600/P1010079.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjByhCi0By_CQ8v3FXqq9DGwsYqpX9PyGIiRaO-sD4rrCgMQcoBgQFLHVapZiJ7Cva7NSIALXZlIEUgv3GP_sRCZPLCNZK1JIA7NlR7M8fDjF9wC-2dQnPAo6Pl2urqLk1cTtArxkoMb8mM/s400/P1010079.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>~ My top-note bed: parsley, dill, basil and chives ~</i> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">You can do something like this even if you don't have a backyard. Simply plant herbs in pots on your balcony, or in pots on your kitchen windowsill. Nothing beats the taste of fresh herbs in your cooking.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

I had completely forgotten that it was around this time the second gift would be sent. A card was left in my letterbox notifying of a parcel for collection. When my husband went to the post office he was totally confused, as on the sides of the box was printed "King Arthur Flour"... "What on earth has she bought..." ran through his mind, with "... and who on earth is King Arthur" following quickly after. You see, down under we have never heard of King Arthur and his flour. <br />

All I can say is you know it must be something good when you arrive home and your husband <i>demands</i> that you bake the espresso cupcakes <u>immediately</u>. And this guy doesn't even <i>like </i>cake!<br />

Maybe the espresso powered had something to do with it.<br />

Definitely one of the best as been the quantity and quality of the antique and op shops in the Hunter region. The antique shops sell wares for very reasonable prices, and there are at least 4 op shops in every town, over flowing with random bits and pieces.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I recently visited one such shop and found a stack of vintage patterns stuffed under a counter table stacked with miscellaneous crockery. I was told patterns were 50 cents each. As I was on my lunch break I didn't have the time to sort through the boxes to check the patterns individually for complete pieces and instructions. I asked what price they would accept for the three boxes, and just about fell over when the reply was $10. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">$10?!? I normally pay this for <i><u>one </u></i>vintage pattern on Etsy! So I handed over my blue $10 note and left with three boxes of sewing patterns!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</i></div><div style="text-align: left;">I spent an evening sorting through the boxes. There were soooo many patterns (expect a few giveaways people!) that I divided them up into piles: vintage patterns, more modern patterns I would wear, and those 80's style patterns that are just scary... I am set for children's patterns, the only thing I am missing are the actual kiddies ;-) The ladies vintage patterns were all darling, and there were also some odd ball patterns that are kinda cool. I have checked over half the patterns I want to keep and they are complete, which I am thrilled about.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><i><br />

This pattern looked so promising. A back-to-front wrap style dress with a high neckline and tied waist. I chose to make view 4 as I liked the shorter length of the skirt and the fact there were no sleeves.<br />
<br />
Simple I thought. <i>Simplicity. </i><br />
<br />
Oh... no...<br />
<br />

See, I hated it so much I didn't even hem it (and Mill, you know how much I <i>looove </i>hemming)! The skirt was created using a mismatched combination of darts and pleats, which just added bulk to parts of the dress where I really didn't want it.<br />

I came across this pair of watercolour paintings at my local thrift store recently. From the information on the back of the paintings, it appears both were painted by women named Joan (different maiden names and addresses) from a town on the south coast of NSW. No dates given, but they did name their works...<br />

I have made this recipe what feels like a hundred times of late, due to a recent combination of cheap banana prices and numerous afternoon tea dates. I stumbled across this recipe during my university years and it has been in my cooking notebook ever since. It is quick, easy, and turns out beautifully every time...<br />
<br />
Ingredients.<br />
4 ripe bananas<br />
1/3 cup butter - room temp!<br />
1 cup sugar<br />
1 egg<br />
1 tsp vanilla essence<br />
1 tsp baking powder<br />
1 1/2 cups flour<br />
pinch of salt<br />
<br />
To Make.<br />
- Preheat oven to 180oC.<br />
- Use electric mixer to combine butter and bananas in a large mixing bowl until combined.<br />
- Mix in sugar, eggs and vanilla until combined (mixture should lighten slightly).<br />
- Sprinkle baking powder and salt onto mixture.<br />
- Sift in flour and mix to combine.<br />
- Pour mixture into greased loaf tin.<br />
- Bake for one hour then cool on wire rack.<br />
* <i>Sometimes I like to add slices of banana along the top of the loaf.</i><br />
<br />

<div style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Last week I was fortunate enough to find an Ashford wheel for <i>very </i>cheep. As I am new to this hobby I did not want to invest much money in my first wheel, but did hope that for the small price I paid I wouldn't be receiving a total lemon. Luckily for me, after doing some simple maintenance on the wheel (new hooks, leather piece, string, and a bit of oil) it is running smoothly. I did a little research and believe this wheel was made circa 1975, judging by <a href="http://www.ashford.co.nz//newsite/images/Patterns/traditional-timeline-website.pdf">this timeline</a>. </span></div><br />

<div style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What I was most excited about was that it was a vintage Ashford wheel. <a href="http://www.ashford.co.nz/newsite/">Ashford</a> is a New Zealand company, that was founded by Walter Ashford in 1934. Ashford designed flat pack wheels for people to use during war time and following there after. <div style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I have been teaching myself to spin via youtube videos, online articles and books. The skill of spinning is evolving slowly. I have mastered the motion of the treadle, however my grafting leaves a lot to be desired! I am troubleshooting this problem and can see I am getting better and stopping this happening. </span></div><br />

All so lovely against the skin and far more inviting than the typical acrylic sold at my local Spotlight. While I move and loop the beautiful yarns in my hands, my mind traces over the journey these fibres have had before they reach my needles. The process of <i>making</i> wool into knitting yarn. This lead me to toy with the idea of spinning my own wool. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I took action. On Saturday I became a member of my local Spinners and Weavers Guild!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After some googling and a few emails I found the group and was warming invited to attend their meeting (which also happened to be their Annual General Meeting!). When I arrived at the Community Hall I was greeted with the sound of treadling wooden wheels, chatter and laughter. <a href="http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/5757/pikelets">Pikelets</a>, an assortment of cakes, and cups of tea were spread out across the high table squeezed tightly into the hall kitchen. I watched as the ladies each took a turn at show and tell, and I learnt about a unique breed of New Zealand sheep that can be shorn every six months (the name of the breed escapes me at this very moment). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The Guild ladies were all very welcoming and patiently answered my 1001 questions. I was supplied with a bag of fleece (<i>fresh from the sheep!</i>) for practicing purposes, a spinning wheel to borrow and a book on loan from the Guild library.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">This is the final instalment of the Serger Series. Today I wanted to share with you a simple money saving tip that I find really useful, especially when I need to serge with thread colours that I don't normally use (think red, green, blue, etc).</div><div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">Serger threads can cost quite a bit of money. In Australia I typically see them for around $6.00 each. If I am stitching with four threads that can become quite expensive! So if you have a more unusual colour you want to stitch with, but know you probably won’t stitch with the colour again any time soon, why not only buy two spools instead of four? </div><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWR8WmFtu2YevYDpmxvW7C4IgK2E6OJZNsgRTaW3DSOh9sPGkMbF2lcX1qc4sTqfSj2vW5K8f23JHRgIb34Zzin9TlgQR8QoUd71rJL4_5-uOQ8SN6RKE7hyphenhyphenINsuuDOJRPS4XCModPD9NM/s1600/melrose-12-pack-neutral-color-serger-thread~533411.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWR8WmFtu2YevYDpmxvW7C4IgK2E6OJZNsgRTaW3DSOh9sPGkMbF2lcX1qc4sTqfSj2vW5K8f23JHRgIb34Zzin9TlgQR8QoUd71rJL4_5-uOQ8SN6RKE7hyphenhyphenINsuuDOJRPS4XCModPD9NM/s1600/melrose-12-pack-neutral-color-serger-thread~533411.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i> ~<a href="http://www.hsn.com/crafts-sewing/melrose-12-pack-neutral-color-serger-thread_p-5679738_xp.aspx">Melrose 12-pack</a> neutral colour serger thread ~</i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>Use the two spools of the colour that match your garment as the bottom looper threads, and use a neutral thread colour for the needle threads. As the needle threads only provide tiny stabilising stitches, no one is really going to notice. This means you get the right colour stitches for half the price! (Note: This works just as well for three thread stitching too).<br />
<br />
I really hope you've all found this series helpful. I have very much enjoyed sharing it with you!<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">Due to a very busy weekend there has been some radio silence on the Serger Series! It has been fantastic reading your comments and emails, and especially encouraging to hear that these posts are inspiring some of you to dust off your sergers! Eileen left an especially lovely comment: <i>"<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.917969); font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I am loving your serger series and have been checking your site daily for entries. I bought a serger about a year ago and have used it very little (I think I have been intimidated). But after I read your article I took it out and rethreaded it (I tried once and was unable to). Not only did I get it right but the stitches were right on (I did the 4 color thread as you had suggested). Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, and for inspiring me!</span>"</i> I am thrilled that these posts encouraged you so Eileen! Can't wait to see what you stitch up!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">* * * * * * *</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">Three thread sewing is possible using a serger. This technique uses one needle and two lower threads (remove the left needle when stitching). Three thread seams are perfect for medium to heavy weight fabrics as they are not as bulky. If you have the ability on your machine to change the needle position, this gives additional ability to adjust the stitch width.</span> </div><br />
