You may (or may not) have been wondering why on earth I have been so quiet on this blog lately, and more importantly why I haven't been getting any sewing done! Here's why...
Yep. That is my sewing room. Full of packed moving boxes!
Jamie has a new job in Newcastle and we will be moving house on Friday. This has all happened really fast for us. It is a change neither of us was expecting, but we are embracing it as a chance to begin a new chapter in our lives. Newcastle really isn't that big a move. It's not like we are moving interstate or overseas, but it is sad all the same. It is only 2 hours drive from Sydney so we will hopefully still be able to come back regularly and visit friends and family. But it is still far enough away to mean that all our casual catch ups with friends that we do during the week just won't be happening anymore :-(
I will need to find a job, which I am feeling pretty nervous about, and really have no idea what I will do up there.
This week will be a whirlwind of packing, finalising details, and saying goodbye to friends.
However, it won't all be doom and gloom and stress. There are two exciting things for me about this move!
1) The place that we are renting has a backyard and a veggie patch already set up!!! No longer will my veggie plot be a tiny piece of dirt three flights of stairs below my floor, with only half a days worth of sunlight. I am super excited about weeding the space, fixing it up, and getting a home garden growing.
2) I will have the chance to set up a new sewing room. Our place will have three rooms, so that we have a spare room for when friends come up and visit us (please come up and visit us). The sewing room will be the smallest room at the back of the house. I can only vaguely remember what this room looks like, but it does have a cool old wooden door. Just like in our current apartment, it will be called the sewing room but it will have parts of it used for storing other things too.
So, here's where you all come in. I am asking you all how you have your sewing space set up? Do you have any tips for how I should be setting my sewing space up? Have you/will you do a blog post about your sewing space? Do you have any links to websites that document cool sewing spaces?
I am in need of inspiration! The quicker I have the space set up, the quicker I can get back to stitching...

oh! good luck with the move! I'll be doing that very soon too!!
ReplyDeleteOooh how exciting! Good luck with the move. I am moving in with my boyfriend in the autumn (althought this is dependent on whether we survive 4 weeks travelling together beforehand!) and he has said i can have one of the spare rooms as my sewing room...i am excited at the prospect as it is a lot bigger than the room i use now. I am looking forward to seeing your new sewing space - maybe it will give me some inspiration!
ReplyDeleteMoving - such a hassle but also so exciting! While I've changed a few things, here's the link to my post with my sewing space: http://vesuviusmama.blogspot.com/2009/12/im-finally-sitting.html.
ReplyDeleteHi Sam! Wow, what a big change for you both! While I am not moving to a new city or anything, I am completely in the middle of moving/planning right now as we've just gotten home to Portland after traveling, and move into our new house this week! I, too, am really excited to have an extra room that can be at least partially a sewing room. I've never had a dedicated sewing room before, so I'm not really sure how to go about setting it up either. I am going to do a blog series on "Setting Up Housekeeping" where I'll talk about the organization and arrangements of various rooms, so I'll talk about it there. All I know right now is that I'll be using Matt's old desk from his dad's house as my sewing table, and it has a big working space and a few drawers for storage. Not sure what else I'll do- stay tuned for that, and good luck with the move!
ReplyDeleteWow, all change huh?! You'll love gardening your patch I'll bet!
ReplyDeleteI keepmeaning todo a post about my sewing space (a summer house in the garden) but it's such a mess at the moment! I have my sewing machine table and cutting/work table in an "L" shape so I only have to swivel round on my chair. If you imagine my sewing machine in front of me, my work surface along my left side, then I have my ironing board along my right side so that the 3 together form a "U" shape. Everything within easy access by just swivelling around on my chair. I think there is a photo right nearthe beginning of my photo stream on Flickr.
Good luck with the move!!!

Moving,,it is a lot of work packing and unpacking, but I am sure you will love your new space. A garden, you will be able to grow so many things because it looks quite large.
ReplyDeleteGood luck.
Look forward to seeing your new sewing room.
Patricia
Can't help you with the sewing space, but good luck in your new home Sam. I am sure that after a few weeks of whirlwind activity and adjustment you will find your feet.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy it! x
Good luck with the move, it sounds like there will be some wonderful things to look forward to in the new house which will make the move more exciting. In regards to the new sewing room I faced the same dilema last year and here is my finished room. http://ahomeforida.blogspot.com/2011/01/ive-been-busy.html and here is my how I have stored my fabric

Have fun setting up the room and make sure you post some photos!
Hope the move goes well and looking forward to seeing your new sewing room. Wow, you get a whole room to yourself. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteWe just went through a move as well, and seeing those boxes remind me of what we went through. Anyhow, how was it? I hope that you were as happy as we were during that time. I find it nerve-racking, but I enjoyed it especially when we're packing our stuff. Lots of boxes everywhere! The place was quite messy, but I expected that. Hahaha!
